Help raise money for vital air quality monitoring
Campaign group Fair Air for East Dulwich is raising £1,500 to fund six diffusion tubes which will measure air quality around schools on Grove Vale, East Dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane.
These are routes that were already carrying the highest traffic volumes in the area, and in 2019 registered above illegal levels of pollution from the very limited number of (Nitrogen Dioxide) diffusion tubes in place. Now, because of the road closures in Dulwich Village and East Dulwich, these roads – home to many of the area’s schools, nurseries, health centres and shops – are further congested and polluted by displaced traffic.
Southwark Council carried out no traffic or air quality monitoring before closing roads in Dulwich. The LTN boundary roads that are now heavily congested are all residential, many with a high proportion of BAME residents (as high as 60%) and social housing. As many as 60% of the local businesses are also BAME. Significant numbers of children use these roads to access their schools: it’s estimated that more than 3,000 schoolchildren are walking and cycling on East Dulwich Grove.
Fair Air for East Dulwich is a group of residents, parents and businesses who have been asking Southwark Council for months to monitor air pollution on these roads. Because this hasn’t happened, they are now having to find the money to do the monitoring themselves. Please consider making an urgent contribution via the GoFundMe page, which will also give you more information about the project.
Any funds above the £1500 goal will go towards lengthening the period of monitoring, introducing further diffusion tubes on other high-traffic roads, and raising awareness via leaflets and posters.
